Elizabeth Burke Fives’ Obituary - 1918
Early Sunday morning, Nov. 3rd (1918), Elizabeth Burke, wife of Wm. F. Fives passed away at the home of her husband’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.H. Fives at Bethany, after ten days illness of influenza, after which pneumonia developed. She was aged 23 years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Burke, formerly of Rileyville, and on April 16th last was united in marriage to Mr. Fives, taking up their residence at the parental home. Graduating from Honesdale high school, class of 1914, she was a successful teacher in the county until her marriage and was a highly esteemed young woman, active in community affairs, being the treasurer of Bethany Red Cross. Besides the husband, she leaves one sister, Miss Mary Burke, who  resides with the mother on Sixth street, and three brothers, James of Detroit, Michael John in military training at Camp Jackson, So. Carolina and William of Port Jervis. Private funeral services were held Monday afternoon, Rev.  J.J. O’Toole officiating, and the remains were brought to Honesdale for burial in St. John’s Catholic cemetery. At the present time, Mr. and Mrs. P.H. Fives are both ill with the prevailing epidemic.
